The Very Idea of Israel Taking over Gaza is Ridiculous.

The fact that a conversation can now be had about the complete occupation of Gaza is insane. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, announced, as of May 6th, that Israel’s security council had a new plan to occupy Gaza. The plan focuses on occupation, breaking from the previous strategy of raids and pinpoint strikes that Israel has used since the tail end of 2023.
It is hard to believe that many people see Israel’s current actions and possible future occupation in a good light. From a strategic standpoint, Hamas has already proven adept at insurgency; Israel cannot secure Gaza without great cost. Both in money, but also in lives. Not just soldiers, but the lives of Palestinian civilians, Jewish settlers near the border of Gaza, and even humanitarian workers. From a humanitarian standpoint, one must contend with the number of lives that will be lost in fighting, but also in the growing aid crisis. The UN has announced that it will not take part in Israel’s actions, which may cause a suspension or reduction in aid, endangering all persons in Gaza.
Israel’s acts both in Gaza but also in the West Bank have proven reprehensible. Factions of the Israeli government wish to see the population of Gaza removed and placed elsewhere. As you read the newsletter today, the IDF forces Palestinians south towards the Egyptian border. One does not have to think hard to predict that Israel may begin moving settlers into the north of Gaza, even. Settlers who in the past have proven violent and dangerous.
There are 59 hostages remaining in Gaza. Estimates as to how many are alive vary; however, according to Israel’s defense ministry and Netanyahu, estimates put fewer than 25 persons alive. Yes, Israel has a right to seek justice and pursue those responsible for October 7th, However, it cannot be at the expense of innocent Palestinian people. Their forcible removal cannot be condoned.
We must stand against Israel’s actions, but more particularly, the hard right factions given voice by Netanyahu. It grows clearer every day that the only winners of the conflict will be him and his cronies.
